Question
Which type of test (independent samples t-test, dependent samples t-test, one sample t-test, one way anova) for the following three scenarios?
a. We want to find out if gender has any effect on how fast people detect emotions. We set up a study where we record the number of seconds it takes for a person to correctly identify the emotion portrayed in a picture. We recruit an equal number of men and women to participate in our pseudo-experiment and then compare the times between men and women.
b. We want to know if money affects happiness. We surveyed 20 people one week before they were notified of winning a large publishers clearing house sweepstakes and then again one month after they recieved their prize.
c. We want to know if people's perception of luck can affect their performance. We recruit some participants to play a round of put-put golf. One group of people are told the putter they are using has been really lucky all day. A second group of people are told that the putter has been really unlucky all day. The third group of people are just handed the putter with no comment.
Explanation / Answer
Ans:
a)We want to find out if gender has any effect on how fast people detect emotions. We set up a study where we record the number of seconds it takes for a person to correctly identify the emotion portrayed in a picture. We recruit an equal number of men and women to participate in our pseudo-experiment and then compare the times between men and women.
As,we are compairing two indpendents samples or groups,we will use independent samples t-test.
b)We want to know if money affects happiness. We surveyed 20 people one week before they were notified of winning a large publishers clearing house sweepstakes and then again one month after they recieved their prize.
As we are comparing the one group at different times i.e we are using dependent samples,so we will use dependent samples t-test.
c)We want to know if people's perception of luck can affect their performance. We recruit some participants to play a round of put-put golf. One group of people are told the putter they are using has been really lucky all day. A second group of people are told that the putter has been really unlucky all day. The third group of people are just handed the putter with no comment.
As,we are compairing 3 different groups for whether some factor affect the subject's performances,so we will use one way ANOVA.
