Question
Over the past several months, an adult patient has been treated for tetany (severe muscle spasms). The condition is associated with an average total calcium level below 6 mg/dl. Recently, the patient's last 10 calcium tests gave a sample mean of 9.95 mg/dl. Assume the population standard deviation is 1.02
a. Find 99.9% confidence interval for the population mean of total calcium in this patient's blood.
b. Based on your results in part (a), does it seem that this patient still has a calcium deficiency? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
A) At 99.9% cinfidence interval the critical value is Z0.9995 = 3.27
Cinfidence interval is
Mean +/- Z0.9995 * SD/sqrt (n)
= 9.95 +/- 3.27 * 1.02/sqrt(10)
= 9.95 +/- 1.05
= 8.9, 11
B) No it doesn't seem that the patient still has a calcium deficiency, beacause the interval values are greater than 6.
