Question

1. In the last decade or two, there has been a surge of popularity in vegetarianism. One of tho many benefits that vegetarians claim is increased lifespan. There also seems to be scientific evidence of this, with some studies finding small increases in lifespan. However, studies of this nature are observational, meaning that they use data in which vegetarianism has not been randomly assigned. Controls are often included, but usually the list of controls is not extensive. la. Describe one factor that if not controlled for would lead to omitted variable bias. Ib. Explain the direction you expect the bias from your omitted variable to take. lc. Explain how your answers to the previous questions should influence your understanding of the finding that vegetarians live longer than non-vegetarians

Explanation / Answer

As we are trying to compare the benefits of vegetarians with the non vegetarins for an increases lifspan , we must control the geographical location & the climatic conditions too. What if adverse climatic conditions in one location signficantly increases/decreases the lifespan

b
If the climatic conditions are adverse , we would expect the bias to increase as we are not accounting for it in our model

c)

We should take independent samples of both vegetarians and non vegetarians across different

Geo-Locations
Age groups
Gender
Work-life conditions etc

This way we ensure that the sample is a true representative of the population and the inferences drawn from statistics are applicable , in general, to the population
