Question

6. Creating Effective Graphics - Part 1

Carefully evaluate the best way to illustrate your data. Using graphics in your report will help clarify data, create visual interest, and make numerical data meaningful. However, be sure to properly match graphics with your objective. Review your objective and the purpose for each graphic, and then make an informed decision.

1. Use a flowchart in your report to (visualize a whole unit and the proportions of its components / define a hierarchy of elements / display a process or procedure)

Use the table to answer the following question.

Figure 2:

Design Goods Company

Four-Year Revenue (in millions of dollars)

2. What is the error in the title section of the table?

The title should be located at the top of the table, and each column should have a label at the top.

Titles should be on a separate page.

There is no error in this section.

Consider each scenario, and then answer the question.

You work for a software development company that recently underwent rapid growth. This growth prompted a shift in the management structure and the promotion of three departmental managers to executive positions. Your supervisor has asked you to prepare a brief informational report on the company’s expansion for the board of directors.

3. What would you use to show how the chain of command has changed after the promotion of three managers to executives?

An organizational chart

A bar chart

A line chart

Your company is building a new office site in a different state. You want to show your board members the progress of the construction.

4. What should you use to illustrate the data?

A flowchart

Photographs

An organizational chart

Consider the following scenario, and then answer the question.

A coworker has been asked to give a report on customer satisfaction with your newly implemented technical support center. She is thinking about using a line chart to trace the increase in customer satisfaction over the last two months, but she would like some advice on how to use graphics appropriately.

5. What advice should you give her?

Begin with a grid divided into squares.

Arrange the time components vertically on the left-hand side of the chart.

Avoid plotting the first value when preparing a segmented chart.

Use the line chart to complete the following exercises.

6. Identify the error in the heading of the line chart.

The heading indicates that the chart depicts revenue in 2010, but no data is recorded for that year.

The heading should consist only of the years.

The heading should be placed at the bottom of the chart, and revenue should be recorded for 2011.

7. If the chart measures CaliMart’s revenues in millions of dollars, how much more money did CaliMart make in 2009 than in 2008?

$3 million

$8 million

$6 million

Year Landscape Design Graphic Design Textile Design ($) ($) ($) 2003 2.80 1.50 3.40 1.00 2004 3.00 1.60 4.00 2.00 2002 2.00 1.90 3.90 1.25 2001 1.50 1.20 1.60 3.00 Cali Mart Revenues 2005-2010 50 46 42 38 34 30 26 18 14 10 2005 2006 2007 Year 2008 2009

Explanation / Answer

1) Not able to understand the question

2)The title should be located at the top of the table, and each column should have a label at the top.

3)We would like to use the organisational flow chart. It is the best way to identify which management position will cover what responsibilities or department.

4) A flow chart with photographs and its details would be the best way to show the progress of the construction

5) I would say to use the grid divided into squares as the other two options will not completly make sense. In a line graph the time should always be displayed on the horizontal axis and segmented chart wont be the best way to report customer satisfaction survey.

6)The heading indicates that the chart depicts revenue in 2010, but no data is recorded for that year.

7) $8 million
