Karotypes are prepared by usingisolated somatic cells. These cells are treated with a drug thatstimulates the mitosis and then grown in a culture. After the cellshave grown they are stained and photographed with a microscope.This image is sent to the computer screen where the chromosomes arethen grouped and arranged by number. To determine if someone is male or female simply look at the 23chromosome pair and notice if one chromosome is larger than theother. If so this is the karotype of a male. Males have one X andone Y chromosome. The X chromosome is rather large compared to thesmaller Y.
