Question

Twenty-five different cars were tested, and their weights (in pounds) and mileage (miles per gallon) were measured. The regression of mileage on weight has the output shown below.

A) Find the predicted mileage for a car which weighs 2400 pounds. Round your answer to one decimal place.

B) A car that weighs 2400 pounds has a predicted mileage of 38.9 miles per gallon. If the car has an observed mileage of 36 miles per gallon, find the residual.

Predictor Coefficient SE Coefficient T P Constant 49.987 2.654 18.835 0.000 Weight -0.0046 0.00027 -17.132 0.000

Explanation / Answer

Solution- Regression equation is-

Mileage = 49.987 - 0.0046 * weight

(A) When weight = 2400 then predicted mileage = 49.987 - 0.0046 * 2400

= 38.947

(B) Predicted mileage = 38.9 and observed mileage= 36

SO residual = observed - predicted

= 36 - 38.9

= -2.9
