Question

In the following scenarios, determine whether the variable should be added to the multiple regression analysis. a. In a study of cardiac health after heart attack it was found that diet and exercise are related to recovery rates. Diet and exercise are highly correlated. Should exercise be included in an analysis where diet is already included? b. In the same study, the researchers also found that social support is related to recovery rates, but is not related to diet or exercise. Should social support be included in the analysis?

Explanation / Answer

a) No , we should not include excercise in the analysis as the variables are correlated , hence variation in one would cause the other one to vary too , either increase or decrease . So , there is no need to add an extra variable for the regression analysis. we ideally want that the relation between the independent variables should be as low as possible

b)

Yes , as social support is directly related to the recovery rates and not to diet or excercise , we must add this variable to the analysis.

We want that independent variable be related to dependent variable and not related among themselves
