Question
Provide a complete interpretation of the correlation coefficients described below. Answers must be typed and written in your own words. Answers will be graded for content and grammar.
a. -.45 between the high school GPA and rating on delinquency scale.
b. .71 number of officers assigned to a beat during the day and the number of officers assigned to a beat at night.

d. -.30 between the number of prisoners on death row and a state's rate of violent crime.
e. .48 between the number of times hit a teacher in the last 12 months and the number of times hit a parent in the last 12 months.
Explanation / Answer
a. Since the correlation is - 0.45 i.e. negative and moderate,
the high school GPA is supposed to increase as the rating in
delinquency scale decreases, though the relationship is not
quite strong.
b. Since the correlation is 0.71, i.e. positive and reasonably
high, the number of officers assigned in a night will increase
if the number of officers assigned in a day increases. The
relationship is quite strong.
c. Since the correlation is positive and reasonably high, the
number of months from arrest to adjudication is supposed
to increase as number of charges increases.
d. The nunber of prisoners on death row increases as the
state's rate of violent crime decreases. Though the
relationship is weak.
e. As the number of times hit a teacher in the last 12 months
increases, the number of times hit a parent in the last 12
months also increases. Though the relationship is moderate.
