Question

To determine the effects of nutrition education on childhood obesity, a new program was implemented in half of the elementary schools in New York City. The other half received no additional nutrition education than what was currently in the curriculum. Schools were selected by drawing names out of a hat. The children were measured once a month to calculate their BMI. This was done by a nurse who was unaware of whether or not the school was undergoing the intervention. What type of experimental study was this?

Explanation / Answer

as the schools were selected randomly from the hat , hence the samples were independent of one another as selection of 1 group of schools was not effected by the selection of another group of schools.

Moreoever the BMI value is a numeric variable , so we would want to compare the average BMI values of the 2 groups. As the children were measured just once a month so there is no repetition , hence we can conduct a

2 independent samples t test for the analysis that compares the average BMI of the 2 group of schools
