Question

An online university wants to invest in a new study program. Before they make the commitment, the research team wants to know how many students enrolled in the university would actually use the study program. They decided to conduct a survey to find out. The institution has 4,000 undergraduate students.

How many students would you survey? How would you choose them? (Be specific in your sampling method description)

Adam got the name of all 4,000 students in the university and put their names in a hat. He then drew 300 names. What do you think of Adam’s survey? Explain your answer.

Sarah asked all currently enrolled seniors. What do you think of Sarah’s survey? Explain your answer.

Marshall surveyed 120 people in the drama club. What do you think of Marshall’s survey? Explain your answer.

Morgan added a survey to the university’s website. Any student could click on the survey and fill it out. The survey was closed once the university received 300 responses. What do you think of Morgan’s survey? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

As the population is of 4000 undergraduate students, so i would choose a sample of maximum 5% which is 200. I would choose a simple random sample of 200 students. i would put a random number from 1 to 4000 on these ID. So, i would select 200 random number from a random number generator or random number table. That would be the ideal way to select a sample size of 200 students.

For Adam:

Adam's survey method is a good method to select a sample size of 300. This type of sampling a random samling. But, a precaution must be there that names in the hat must be mixed very well.

FOr sarah :

Sarah method is a not good method of random sampling. He only enrolled a certain segments of population that is only seniors so it is not a random sampling.

For Marshall:

Marshall surveyed is biased as it draws only results from a specific set of people who are from Drama club so not a simple random sample.

For Morgan:

Morgan survey will have vluntory bias as it only involved people who voluntory wanted to give their responses. so, not a simple random sampling.
