Question

Hypothesis Testing

FOX News and CNN and other news networks, guests often express their views in strong, persuasive and sometimes frightening terms. For example, a Scientist who strongly believes that global warming is happening will warn us of the dire consequences (rising sea levels, flooding, etc.)

However, she believes the general public does not take her warning and arguments seriously. If the scientist is correct and we do not take her seriously; would this be a Type 1 or Type II error? Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

The type I error is defined as the event of rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true.

Type II error is the event of retaining the null hypothesis when it is false

Here in our case, we are retaining the null hypothesis that there are not change in the rising sea levels, flooding etc even though the null hypothesis is false here. Therefore this is a case of a type II error here.
