Question

please help me find the z score for #1 and solve for #2.

Both questions refer to the following data: The weight of the trout in Lake Oconee average 2.5 pounds, with a population standard deviation of 0.6 pounds. ( = 2.5 lbs, = 0.6 lbs ). Uncle Bill told his wife that he was going fishing in Lake Oconee. He came home from his fishing trip with six (6) trout having a total weight of 20 pounds. Do you think he really caught this group of fish in Lake Oconee? (Answer in a complete sentence. Support your answer with proper statistics. Show your work.) 1. 2 2. In Lake Oconee, any trout in the bottom 20% by weight must be thrown back If you catch a trout that weighs 1.8 pounds, do you have to throw it back? (Answer in a complete sentence. Support your answer with proper statistics. Show your work.)

Explanation / Answer

1)here expected weight of 6 trout =2.5*6=15

and std deviaiton =0.6*(6)1/2 =1.4697

therefore test statistic z =(X-mean)/std error =(20-15)/1.4697=3.402

2) for 20 percentile ; z score =-0.8416

therefore corresponding value =mean +z*Std deviation =2.5-0.8416*0.6=1.995

as 1.8 pounds is less then above value ; tehrefore this needs to be thrown back
