Question
This problem is based on information taken from the GSS Data File from the year 2014. Out of 538 males, 376 said that it is important that health care be provided for everyone. Out of 682 females 559 said that it is important that health care be provided for everyone. 2. Find the 97% confidence interval for the difference between the proportions of males and females who said it is important that health care be provided for everyone. Does this data indicate that the population proportion of the is different for males than it is for females? ExplainExplanation / Answer
Here sample proportion for males = p^1 = 376/538 = 0.6989
sample proportion for females = p^2 = 559/682 = 0.8196
97% confidence interval = ( p^1 - p^2) +- Z97% sqrt [p^1 * (1 - p^1)/n1 + p^2 * (1 - p^2)/n2]
= (0.6989 - 0.8196) +- 2.17 * sqrt [0.6989 * (1 - 0.6989)/538 + 0.8196 * (1 - 0.8196)/682]
= -0.1207 + 2.17 * 0.02466
= (-0.0672, -0.1742)
Here this data indicates that the population proportion is different for males than it is for females.
