Question

[12] 4. In a recent sample of 48 students in a lower division MAhh distribution of weight, to be 104 pounds and the maximum is Assume Shaped. Answer the question using the empirical rule (or 6o-rule) has 212 pounds. Assume that the distribution of weight, X has a bell- (a) Find an approximate 95% interval of the mean for the data. 2. (b) Find the weight of a student (Wilford Z. Snivel) whose z-score is 2.87 1 4t o (e) Find the (approximate) endpoints of an interval that will contain the weights of the students lower 84% of the time.

Explanation / Answer

here for empirical rule; 6*std deviation =(max-min)

std deviaiton =(212-104)/6=18

mean=(min+max)/2=(104+212)/2=158

as 95% values are 2 std deviation from mean from epirical rule

hence 95% interval =mean -/+2*std deviaiton =158-/+2*18=(122 ; 194)

b)

weight =mean+z*std deviation =158+2.8*18=208.4

c)

for 84 percentile falls at 1 std deviaiton from mean

hence coresponding endpoints =104 ; 158+18= 104 ; 176
