Question

In 2015, the population of the world was 7.3 billion people. In the last decade, population has increased approximately 1.2% per year. The current annual food supply is initially adequate for 11 billion people and is increasing at a constant rate adequate for an additional 0.4 billion people per year. While population growth rates have slowed since the mid-20th century, many still claim there is reason for alarm, claiming a food storage will occur as soon as the year 2050. In this lab, you will explore the population growth rates and the food production rates to see if there is indeed reason for concern. 11. Assuming it was possible, if the world in since 2015 only had a 0.5% population increase per year but maintained the original food production, would shortages still occur?

Explanation / Answer

Ans Food Shortage will be cost if Population exceeds the food supply

Suppose we say the shortage is caused in the year 2015 + x

Then Population in that year will be 7.3 * (1.012)x and the food supply will be 11 + 0.4x

So by the condition we said 7.3 * (1.012)x > 11 + 0.4x Now according to the problem the year mentioned is 2050 so the value of x is 35 so the Population is 7.3 * (1.012)35 =11.0825 billions and the food production will be 11+0.4*35 = 24 billions so there will be no shortage of food by 2050 year.

But as x is increased at one point the population will exceed the food supply but not in 2050 since population is increasing exponentially and food supply is increasing in a linear equation.

If population increases by 0.5percent to check if food shortage will occur keeping food production same then 7.3 * (1.005)x > 11 or x > 82.21 so after 82.21 years shortage will be cost.
