Question

A dentist would like to conduct an experiment to determine the effect of the brand of toothpaste (Crest or Colgate) and the type of toothbrush (regular or electric) his patients use on the health of their teeth. The dentist has 240 patients (80 children and 160 adults) who volunteer to participate in the experiment. The treatments will be randomly assigned to the subjects. The dentist believes the effect of the treatments wil differ for children and adults, so she conducts a randomized block design. (a) Identify the following in this experiment i. factors ii. factor levels iii. treatments iv. response variable v. blocking variable (b) How is control achieved in this experiment? (c) Suppose at the end of the experiment that it is determined that subjects who used Crest toothpaste and an electric toothbrush had significantly healthier teeth than subjects in the other treatment groups. Can we conclude that the treatment was likely the cause?

Explanation / Answer

a. i. There are two factors- one is the brand of toothpaste and another one is the type of toothbrush.

ii. These two factors are further studied their effects each on the heath of the teeth in two levels. That is the brand of the toothpaste has two levels such as the crest or colgate brand. And the type of toothpaste has two levels - one is of regular and another one is electric type toothbrush.

iii. There are two different treatments, one is brand of the toothpatse and another one is the type of toothbrush.

iv. The response variable is the health of the patients teeth.

v. The block variables are the two different type of patients, one is children and another one is adults.

b. It is a volunteered sampling of the patients who visit a specific doctor. These samples are from the doctors list of patients of 240 patients and there are 160 adults and 80 children. There is a control with the blocking of patients as two categories as children and adults that will definetly reduce the variations in the randomized block design studies.

c. From the conclusion that the doctors study came out with the randomized block design model, we can state that the brand of toothpaste and the type of toothbrush are the few of the many causes for the health of the patients teeth. There are many other variables like the type of food, frequency of eating, number of times brushed in a day, etc..
