Question

espond to the following: On the basis of what you learned in the readings, define the terms "sample" and "population" and describe . some of the advantages and disadvantages of using a sample compared to a population. Support your reasoning with examples. A resea rcher is studying the effects of caffeine on exam scores of college students. In this study: . e What would be the population and sample of this rescarch? Extrapolate your views of the advantages and disadvantages of samples and populations to this example. Why would the researcher want to use a sample or a population in this study? o the examales that thev provided to

Explanation / Answer

Sample- It is a set of data collected and/or selected from a statistical population by a defined procedure. The elements of a sample are known as sample points, sampling units or observations. The sample usually represents a subset of manageable size.

Population refers to the total set of observations that can be made. For example, if we are studying the weight of adult women, thepopulation is the set of weights of all the women in the world.

Advantages of using sample over population:-

Less time consuming

Scope of sampling is high-easy to generalise data

Accuracy of data is high-stbility of results

convenience-due to small size,no much facilities required.

Intensive and exhaustive data

limited resources required in sample(not require data of entire world)

Better rapport(requires a good rapport between the researcher and the respondents)

Disadvantages:-

Example:- To find "All people with AIDS"

So,Taregt population may be entire world but accessible population is different like accessible population is "All people with AIDS in the metropolitan St. Louis area"

So sample-"A list of all people with AIDS in the metropolitan St. Louis area who are members of the St. Louis Effort for AIDS"

Q-2.effects of caffeine on exam scores

Population-All college students

Sample-All students studying in St. Louis college

Advantages-low cost and less time consuming, limited resources required, convenience

Disadvantages-Slight impossibility of sampling as a particular college in a particular area may not coincide with the results of entire population

The researcher wants to use sample instead of population because collecting data of all the college students in the entire universe is not possible .
