Question
study EXplain. 103. Daytime running lights_Canada and the Eurapean Union require that cars be equipped with "daytime running lights," headlights that automatically come on at a low level when the car is started. Many manu- facturers are now equipping cars sold in the United States with running lights. Will running lights reduce accidents by making cars more visible? An experiment conducted in a driving simulator suggests that the answer may be "Yes." What concerns would you have about generalizing the results of such an experiment?Explanation / Answer
Hypothesis Testing is all about generalizing a result what we have learnt from a particular sample. As this experiment suggests that the answer may be "Yes", we can have some concerns while generalizing it to everyone in the United States.
First of all, the experiment group must have a good representation of all the different people in the US. Hence, the experiment group is chosen as such that people of different age, occupation, experience are present such that we can generalize the result. See the following image and you will understand it.
Next concern is that the experiment must be conducted within a short time span as behaviours of people can change with time. Therefore, timely conduction of experiment is important.
Other concern is that the size of the experiment group should be huge enough such that variation of the opinion between different people can be captured in our experiment. Therefore, these are the concerns while generalizing it for the whole population of the US.
