Question
Test instructions: I am asking for your response to utilize material from the chapters in Ethics and the Conduct of Business (Boatwright-8th Edition), but summarize in your opinion how you feel about these questions. For the case scenario, answer the question at the end of the scenario.
Legal vs Ethical Standards
If people act legally are they also acting ethically?
If we can do it, does that mean you should do it?
Case Scenario:
You have been on your job 10 months and you enjoy your job and your coworkers. You are in a department of 4 including the supervisor. But over the last 2-3 months, you have noticed behavioral changes in the supervisor. Unfortunately, business has slowed and there is now concern of layoffs even though it is budgeted for the 4 staff members regardless of the business cycle. It is well known the supervisor would like to advance his career and take his supervisors position. But, you and your coworkers have been told by other departments that your supervisor has been reporting things are real slow and it doesn't appear things are going to improve. There is very little praise or direction provided to the department but the supervisor does apparently have a stellar reputation for managing departments. Lately, the supervisor has been printing off Indeed job descriptions and showing to the staff as to where other jobs are. Even worse, at times the supervisor comments that certain staff members are not needed. Of course this has created a very negative and stressful environment now and, to make matters worse, company policy dictates all situations are to be handled through your direct supervisor and it doesn't appear HR has an open door to listening to employee matters. What issues can you identify in this scenario, and are there any productive solutions?
