Question

I need a discussion response to my peers discussion post below

1) To what extent aspects of labor relations in other countries (from Chapter 12, pick ONE country other than the United States) should be adopted in the United States?

Germany has several interesting labor relation aspects but the one I found most interesting is codetermination. This is considered an institutionalized system where employees can voice can be heard. They are able to and encouraged to participate in workplace decision making (Budd, 2017, p.442). Codetermination is said to be the collaboration between management and workers. This type of practice enhances workers representation and participation while also encouraging them to take part in the long term view of their company, making them a valuable part. This has shown to have a favorable outcome for the country (Codetermination in Germany – A role model for the UK and the US, n.d.).

2) Where in the world are labor unions gaining strength? Why do you think that is?

If you look at table 12.1 in our text, it shows the general decline in union density. Our text reminds us that labor relations in each country are partially controlled by economic, sociopolitical, and institutional dimensions which will vary throughout each country. However, Spain and France show over 70% of its employees are covered by a collective bargaining agreement, but its union density is less and 20% (Budd, 2017, p.429). Looking at table 12.2, it shows that while union density is lower, bargaining coverage is gaining strength. The thought is that unions are often organized differently now (Budd, 2017, p.429).

4.)    What do you believe the future of Unions in the U.S. will be like?

With the changes in working conditions today compared to when unions first started, I believe there will be a restructuring of “unions” in moving towards the future. While there is still a need, our text tells us the objectives will not change. Finding an employment relationship of efficiency, equity, and voice are still its main goal, while managing labor rights and property rights (Budd, 2017, p.429).
