Explanation / Answer
1. Look through the information on how to become a supplier to Wal-Mart here (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Why do you think there are so many steps in the process to become a Wal-Mart supplier?
An organisation like Wal-Mart who has vast presence in multiple locations and managing multiple product lines needs to have established mechanism and process in place to ensure that several aspects of managing the suppliers are being met. The aspects are listed but are not limited to compliance to social and environmental conditions , Ethical practises that needs to be followed by the supplier as part of responsible business practise , compliance to local regulation and laws , compliance to labour practise , impact on environment , providing healthy and safety environment condition to name a few.
If there is no standardised process that covers multiple aspects of managing the suppliers , There will not be a streamlined effort and this could cause inefficiency in supply chain of Wal-Mart which is projected as one of the strengths of the retailer.
2. Would selling to Wal-Mart be worth the effort? Explain the pros and cons.
The question on the effort to sell in Wal-Mart is best answered by identifying the line of business that the supplier operates , the current scenario in which the business operates. In one way , there are few lessons that could be learnt by the supplier by making the effort by aligning itself to identify the areas of the improvement that it could make to its own business , Assuming the retail giant like Wal-Mart would establish some best practise to ensure they maximise the efficiency and effectiveness in the business line that they operate , the suppliers could indeed learn a few things and then use them also to capitalise on their business to expand the footprint. It could indeed be a worthwhile effort to get enlisted as supplier. Other potential benefits are increased customer reach through Wal-Mart , improved sales numbers through improved coverage.
However , despite the higher reach there could also be some cons in terms of losing out the individual identity as supplier who could establish the own brand ,the value might get diluted with brand name of Walmart rather than obtaining the individual recognition which might have been received otherwise. There is a trade off which needs to be balanced.
3. Back to our online debate, do you think Wal-Mart is “good for America?” Support your opinion with at least 2 pieces of information that you feel are relevant.
Wal-Mart has provided benefit in terms of cost to the typical American consumer by providing products at lower cost procuring the from the places where the resources are available at lower cost to ensure they are being cost competitive. However, this has also resulted in local resource that indeed has lost a prospective job which could have been provided by adopting make locally.
There has been several debates online and offline and in various forums that debate upon the benefit of Wal-Mart towards America as a whole .
It is strongly felt that Wal-Mart has cost a huge loss to the job market in US which has resulted in the transfer of jobs and have also been noted with complaints on sub standard work practise that happens with suppliers who operate outside of the country which could indeed be viewed as inhuman or unethical work practise . The same has been supported by a article released by Independent institute by Richard K Vedder and Ken Jacobs.
The same mentioned areas are also touched upon by video documentary by PBS which views multiple angles of the pros and cons of Wal-Mart.
