Question

A computer hard drive contains a circular disk with diameter 2.5 inches and spins at a rate of 7200 RPM (revolutions per minute). Find the linear speed of a point on the edge of the disk in inches per minute.

Part 1: Write the 3 formulas needed to solve this problem

Part 2: Using one of the formulas from step 1, find the angle Theta in radians through which the point on the edge of the disk rotates.

Part 3. Using one of the formulas from step 1 and the answer from step 2, find the distance s in inches traveled by the point on the edge.

Part 4: Using one of the formulas from step 1 and the answer from step 3, find the linear speed of the point on the edge of the disk in inches per minute. (Can be an approximation)

Explanation / Answer

circumference = pi* diameter

diameter = 2.5 inches

hence, circumference = 2.5pi

disk moves 2.5pi * 7200 = 56520 inches / minute

therefore, linear speed in miles / hour = 53.52 miles / hour
