Questions –
June Pearson was just promoted to a job as supervisor of the bookkeeping department at an insurance company. Based on the company’s schedule for appraising performance, she needs to conduct an appraisal of Ron Yamamoto, one of the employees, only a month after she started the job. Pearson cannot find any records of goals established for Yamamoto, so she asks his peers and others with whom he has contact to describe his performance. On the basis of this information, Pearson completes an appraisal form and conducts an interview.
a. Which steps of the systematic approach to appraising performance has June omitted?
b. How do you think Yamamoto will react to this interview?
c. Can you think of anything else Pearson could have done to improve this particular appraisal? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
a. The steps of the systematic approach that June omitted are self evaluation of Ron Yamamoto and evaluating performance as her supervisor herself and these are the two most important aspects in the performance evaluation of an employee because only collecting feedbacks from the peers may not be sufficient enough as that may be bias and not proper.
b. If the appraisal is not as per the expectation of Yamamoto then it is very much obvious that he will not be happy and the fact that it was not discussed with him will make him annoyed even more but if his appraisal is better than what he expected then he may not get into a conflict.
c. June should have taken the task seriously and viewing the scenario from Ron's perspective because his career is quite dependent on this fact and June as the supervisor should have gathered knowledge from his previous supervisor about Ron and the self evaluation scope should have been given to Ron in this context so that the feedbacks collected and Ron's expectation could have been balanced to come to a solution.
