Chapter 4 Social and cultural environment

Social Structure

Hong Kong’s easing economic growth continued to weigh on the performance of the country’s consumer market in 2016. At the same time, Hong Kong’s income distribution remains extremely unequal, despite increased government social spending during the period 2011-2016. Over the long term, economic factors (particularly the performance of the country’s external sector), coupled with demographic and lifestyle trends, will be major determinants of income and expenditure patterns in the country. During the period 2011-2016, social class (the middle and the second top income classes, respectively) were the country’s fastest growing. This was the result both of an increase in social spending by the Hong Kong government and of a decline in earnings of the country’s top income households over this timeframe. Nevertheless, social classes (the bottom and top income classes, respectively) are forecast to show the strongest rates of expansion through to 2030, driven by an expected rise in income inequality over the long run. The Country’s Income Gap Is Set to Keep Widening over the Long Term Hong Kong’s income distribution remains highly unequal by both regional and global standards.   Between 2011 and 2016, the country’s income gap recorded a modest decline, principally due to increased social spending by the Hong Kong government over this period. However, income inequality in Hong Kong is expected to resume its upward trend through to 2030, as existing drivers of inequality (including low taxes, a flexible labor market, and low-skilled immigration) are expected to continue over the long term, generating opportunities for companies targeting consumers at both ends of the income distribution.Considerable Differences in Spending Patterns Between the Rich and the Poor.

Cultural

In Hong kong, they have culture know as phone eats first. Hong Kong people won't let their friend pick up a fork before all the plates have arrived, are arranged just so and have been snapped from many different angles. Food plays a huge role in Hong Kong culture. We like to give it the attention it deserves, for example, moon cake for the Mid-Autumn Festival, in go (a sticky, chewy “cake”) for Chinese New Year, and egg tarts for, well, any day we like. A government census in 2016 revealed that more than 200,000 Hong Kong live in subdivided flats, cubicle homes, or care homes. Of that number, 50,000 of them are aged 18 or younger Most of their parents might be too busy to cook a week’s batch of lunches and dinners. Even if they did, they might have to share space in a fridge with other people therefore if form a new culture of eating out in Hong Kong

Chapter 5 Technology environment

Technology of Soybean Extruding in hong kong Extrusion technology, as a cooking process, is particularly suitable for the beneficiation of by-products as it is energy efficient, environmentally friendly and compared to other cooking processes, it has no waste streams that need to be treated, Extrusion can process basic ingredients like sorghum, millet, rice, and maize into a wide array of textures, shapes, and flavors, and can greatly improve their nutritional content when they are processed along with inexpensive forms of protein, such as soybean meal. The process of extruding denatures the protein, eliminates a great number of anti nutritional factors, and at the same time, it changes the tertiary structure of protein, shortens the hydrolysis time of the protein in the intestine and improves the digestibility. Protein is not easy to loss when feeding, as protein and starch substrate combine with each other. It also improves the titer of the protein for the reason that the protein will only be released when the digestive enzyme decomposes protein by the animals. Extruding can release encapsulated fats of the soybean molecular and thus improves the energy value of the fat. Extruding will decrease the content of bacteria, muscardine and fungus in the raw material and increase the safety quality of feed. Gelatinized starch can stimulate the secretion of the lactic acid in the young animals’ stomach, which can prevent the growing of the pathogenic microorganism. After the extruding process, the fat and starch or protein will combine together to generate kind of compound products, named lipoprotein or lipopolysaccharide, it reduces the FFA (Free fatty acid) content, and at the same time, deactivates the lipase, controls the degradation of oil and fats, and also reduces the rancidity of the oil components during storage and transportation period This kind of machine only six workers to man machines that soak and grind the beans, and then steam and package the milk for delivery to 50 outlet

Chapter 6 Contemporary environmental variables

CSR - Hong Kong government is tremendously trying to improve its CSR quotient. Society is increasingly becoming aware of CSR and that’s the main motivating factor for Hong Kong companies to increase its CSR efforts. Greenhouse emissions, water conservation, energy conservation and bio-degradable paper are some of the CSR avenues.Ethics – Hong Kong government has put stringent rules to curb corruption and bureaucracy. There are stringent guidelines to avoid corruption in any avenue. They even have a guide outlining good and ethical business practices. Hong Kong values ethics to a great extent and so every unethical offense has severe consequences.Environment – Hong Kong has a specially designated fund ECF dedicated towards environment conservation. This fund helps in funding NGOs which aim at environment protection. Special emphasis is given to keep pollution levels under control. Waste recycling is another note-worthy step of Hong Kong towards environment protection.Terrorism - Hong Kong is considered one of the safest cities in the world. Hong Kong Police Force is a highly trained group of determ          ined professionals who aim at maintaining the above status.

Explanation / Answer

Social and cultural environment

Social

Hong Kong’s economic growth was on a decline and was reflected on the consumer market in 2016. The country’s income distribution is unequal. The government did attempt to intervene through social spending in the last five years. However, the forecast is that the social class will be a dominant force in the coming years. They are expected to be the fastest growing segment of the population and impact Hong Kong economy through 2030. During the last five years when the government spent for social equality, the income gap was on decline. However, it is expected to increase again as the economy begins to grow. Some of the drivers of income inequality are low taxes, flexible labor market, and unskilled immigration policy. Government is unlikely to change this factors to reduce income inequality. However, similarly to what they did from 2011-2016, the Hong Kong government may keep spending towards social welfare. From the social point of view this provides a unique opportunity to organizations as they can offer products targeting both end of the income spectrum.

Culture

Culturally Hong Kong is a fast moving place. While they hold on to their grass-root tradition in many aspects, the fast paced culture is slowly impacting the population. The people of Hong Kong participate in different celebrations. 2016 government report states that more than 200,000 people live in subdivided apartments, cubicle home or care homes. Out of that 50,000 are under 18. Majority of their parents are too busy to cook lunch or dinner. In addition, subdivided home means that even if meals are prepared, they may need to share the space with other families. As a result, the culture of eating out is on the rise in Hong Kong

Technology environment

Soybean extrusion is beneficial as it is energy efficient, friendly to environment and does not contain much of waste material that needs to be treated. Extrusion can process other ingredients as well. For example, millet, maize, rice and sorghum can be made in to different textures, shapes and flavors. These, when added to a soybean meal can provide extremely high nutritional value.

The process of extrusion also helps with various health benefits. For example, the extrusion removes harmful components and changes the structure of protein to make is easily digestible. Protein and starch combination can be difficult to process for the body. Additionally, extrusion releases fats from the soybean and improves the energy value. It decreases harmful bacteria and fungi and increases food safety. Gelatinized starch can activate simulation of lactic acid in young animals’ body. This can prevent the growth of pathogenic organisms. Extrusion process makes the fat and starch combine with protein to generate a compound product called lipoprotein. It is also knowns as lipopolysaccharide. It reduces free fatty acid and deactivates lipase. This in turn controls the breaking down of oil and fats. It also reduce the rancidity of oil components during storage. To handle an extrusion machine, only six works are enough to soak and grind the beans.

Contemporary environmental variables

CSR

Hong Kong government is actively trying to improve the CSR activities within the country. The people and the society are increasingly becoming aware of CSR initiatives. This is one of the reason that many of the organizations in Hong Kong are increasing their CSR effort. Few avenues where CSR effort is provided are water/energy conservation, greenhouse emission and bio-degradable recycling practice.

Ethics

Hong Kong government is determined to provide strong business ethic environment in the country. As a result the government has laid down strict rules to curb corruption and bureaucracy. There guideline for various ethical standards that includes business practices. Corruption incidents are investigated and dealt with strong consequences.

Environment

Hong Kong has a special fun towards conserving environment. ECF works towards helping various NGOs that work in improving and conserving environment. Initiatives such as pollution control and recycling are undertaken by many NGOs and ECF funds their activities. Government of Hong Kong is keen to keep nature and environment intact.

Terrorism

Hong Kong is one of the safest cities. Terrorism incidents are non-existent in the country and the Hong Kong police are well-trained to handle any incident.
