Explanation / Answer

Question 1

At the beginning of the semester, organizational communication is thought to be a simple and straight forward process without any challenges. The course is very enriching as one is able to identify communication barriers such as ethnocentrism and semantics. Tackling of several communication challenges follows a simplistic thinking; learning over the course of the term improves a student as they are able pinpoint the various communication theories and apply them to some of the scenarios. The most important and intriguing concept is perhaps the use of theories such as cultivation analysis, cultural studies and dramatism to resolve challenges faced at organizational level (Griffin, Crossman, Bordia, Mills, Maras, Pearse&Shanahan, 2010).

Question 2

One course objective that is achieved is the application of appropriate methods according to situations in organizations. The course allows you to understand that visual communications such use of notices is suitable especially when information is intended for the entire company. It also enlightens students that use of emails is one of the best when several department heads intend to reach out to junior staff members. Emails are also favored in outbound and inbound logistics; functions such as communication to suppliers are effective as it reduces administrative expenses for example telephone call charges (Griffin, Crossman, Bordia, Mills, Maras, Pearse&Shanahan, 2010).

Technological advances have brought about interesting tools such as social media; companies are increasingly using it for two way conveyance of information with customers (Linke & Zerfass, 2012). Methods such as suggestion boxes are appropriate for horizontal communication intended for management. Learners are also able to solve challenges such asdirect versus indirect communication through communication theories; this challenge isconspicuous in organizations where there is diversity. Communication accommodation theory is best suited to handle it (Jones, 2010).

Another issue that can be resolved is lack of collaboration and reach-out between departments. Groupthink theory which emphasizes the need to seek alternative opinion can tackle it. Cultural differences in communication is quiet an interesting reading and contributed most to learning as it enables students to identify barriers such as language, semantics, stereotypes and ethnocentrism at work place.
