Question

Facebook, the popular social media site, has 150 million users. Most people who follow Facebook believe that it competes with MySpace for the youth market and with LinkedIn for the adult market. The writer of this article argues that while all three – Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn – aim to connect people, Facebook’s real competition is the microblogging site, Twitter. Both Twitter, with its 6 million users, and Facebook have some features in common and yet are different. They seem to be embarked on a collision course. Why does the author feel that Facebook’s real competition is Twitter and not MySpace or LinkedIn?

What are the similarities and differences between Facebook and Twitter?

How is Twitter reacting to the threat of Facebook?

Why should Google be worried about Facebook and Twitter?

Explanation / Answer

The author feel that Facebook's real competition is Twitter because the facilities that Facebook provides are similar to that of Twitter and the crowd in both the pages are almost similar. Facebook and Twitter both are considered to be of the same genre whereas Myspace is old and a bit obsolete and LinkedIn is a professional platform which is different from the other social media platform. Twitter is the actual competitor because yes twitter possess almost the same crowd but less in number with almost the same facilities.

The basic difference between Facebook and twitter is that Facebook allows users to chat, post photos, notes, videos and also play games but twitter on the other hand allows to post short messages of 140 characters. In Facebook there is option to like, comment, react and share a post whereas in Twitter the option is to follow or repost. Facebook is used to network people but Twitter is used to network ideas or concepts.

The similarities are quite visible as both are social networking platforms and are here to do business by appealing to the mass. The basic objective is networking virtually and do business.

Google is the most popular search engine and YouTube is for video search owned by google but Facebook is actually searched more for videos and with the huge number of users it is surpassing YouTube and even search topics are also getting added with the pages of media and others. Google may lose its importance if Facebook plan to add to their options and the user base they possess will help them get the desired result.
