Question

Hospital Human Resources reported that a person between the age of 18 and 34 has had an average of more than 5 jobs. To see if his claim is correct, a researcher selected a data sample from 10 employees between the ages of 18 and 34:

          8        6        15      6        3        9        13      2        2        4

a) At = .10   can it be concluded that the mean is more than 5 jobs?

b) Construct a 2-tailed 95% C.I.E of . The upper limit of the confidence interval is _________

Note: For the above set of data, you need first to use excel (or other tools) and compute the average and sample standard dev.;

Explanation / Answer

a)

Null Hypothesis : mu > 5

Mean = ( 8+6+15+6+3+9+13+2+2+4)/ 10 = 6.8

SD = 4.49

z = (6.8 -5) / (4.49/sqrt(10)) = 1.27

Probability = 1 - 0.8980 = 0.102

Since , P-value > 0.10 , Failed to reject null hypothesis.

So , the mean is may or may not be more than 5 jobs.

b)

Margin of error (MOE) = (z*SD) / sqrt(n)

z for 95% = 1.96

MOE = (1.96 * 4.49) / sqrt(10) = 2.78

Therefore , CI = ( 6.8 - 2.78 , 6.8 + 2.78 )

= ( 4.02 , 9.58 ) Answer
