Explanation / Answer

In the current setup we have R1a and R1b in parallel, R2 in series and R3 in series, The flow rates at these 3 stations will be C1 = 2*60/12 = 10 units per hour, C2 = 60/2 = 30 units per hour and C3 = 60/10 = 6 units per hour. This means Station 3 is the bottleneck resource.

In new setup, we will have R1a and R2b in parallel, R2 in series ad R3a and R3b in parallel. The flow rates at these 3 stations will be C1 = 2*60/12 = 10 units per hour, C2 = 60/2 = 30 units per hour and C3 = 2*60/10 = 12 units per hour. So, now the bottleneck shifts to Station 1.

a) The throughput time in new workcell is the total time required for processing at Station 1, 2 & 3.

Total Time = T1 + T2 + T3 = 12 + 2 + 10 = 24 mins

The throughput time of the new work cell = 24 minutes

b) The bottleneck in the new setup as mentioned above will be Station 1. Bottleneck time is the time spent by a unit at the bottleneck station 1 which is 12 minutes.

So, Bottleneck time = 12 minutes

c) In the new setup Bottleneck is station 1 and capacity of system will be equal to the capacity of station 1 which is 10 units per hour.

Per day capacity = 8*10 = 80 units/day

Weekly capacity = 6 days * 80 units/day = 480 units per week

d) Without the secod unit at station3, the bottlneck is Station 3 and has a capacity of 6 units per hour.

Per day capacity = 8*6 = 48 units/day

Weekly capacity = 6 days * 48 units/day = 288 units per week
