Question

Test for Independence of the number of aircraft incidents involving airlines vs. general aviation during the day vs. at night.

I believe this is a Parametric test and I am running a chi-square test of independence. The analysis will reveal if there is independence between day and night operational incidents, comparing air carrier and general aviation traffic. I need to know if I am writing the hypotheses correctly.

255 127 382

334 57 391

589 184 773

Null Hypothesis – Operation type (air carrier or GA) and time of day are the same (independent)

Research Hypothesis – Operation type (Air carrier or GA) and time of day are not the same (dependent) - Air carrier aircraft are involved in more incidents

What I am trying to determine is 1) Are there more air carrier or GA incidents? 2) What time of day do these incidents more often happen? 3) If there are more incidents reported for Air Carriers, why do GA aircraft lead to more accidents.

The table has been updated to reflect actual #'s. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Day Night Total Air Carrier 255 127 382 General Aviation 334 57 391 Total 589 184 773
