Imagine that you and Steger (the author of "Globalization: a Very short Introduction" that you have been reading last week) watch the documentary "Life and Debt" together. Following the documentary, you and him are having a heated debate. What is one thing that Steger would agree with and like about the documentary? Why do you think he would like it? What would be one thing in the documentary he would disagree with? Why do you think he would disagree with it? How about you: what is one thing you agree with in the documentary, and what is one thing that you disagree with? Why?

Explanation / Answer

Manfred Steger in his book ‘globalization: a short introduction’ talks about 5 dimensions of globalization such as Economical, Political, Military, Cultural and Ecological. The video talks about the destruction and opportunities that globalization, especially American Companies have brought to their country.

After watching the video Steger would agree that the economic globalization has enabled goods, services, labor and capital move freely across the world. Almost all the international giants have joined hands with the local corporations and established their branches in different countries. He would agree on this because the video explains the role on international players in shaping a new economical order and the changing power of transnational corporations.

He would disagree that globalization has boosted the local economy because the arrival of global players have forced the farmers to import things which were once available in abundance.

I would agree that globalization has enabled countries to reach out to the globe for their produces, thus the market expansion was really made possible. There was no shortage of anything anywhere because everything is available everywhere.

I disagree that globalization has brought any good to the local economy, culture and ecology because I consider globalization as a new form of colonization. Capturingmarkets, thrusting the products which they wanted to produce and sell and creating a culture that’s entirely different from the locals, thus making them feel inferior are the goals of transnational companies.
