Question
8. Sherri is a sophomore in college. When she is home for spring vacation, she is very irritable with her parents. She seizes every opportunity to criticize them and their values and manages to take offense at their every comment to her. Just before she returns to college, she causes a row in which she accuses them of never having given her enough attention and love. Her parents are at a loss to understand her behavior. What they do not know is that for the past several months she has been living off-campus with her boyfriend and using the money her parents send her to help support him. Explain how this fact might have influenced her behavior toward her parents.
Explanation / Answer
Being away from home is common when one goes to college especially in western culture. Parents need to be as much involved with their children as when they are school. Letting them go so that they become independent does not mean that parents should not be accessible to their children. Intimate relationships are common when in college, and finding the right partner all the more diffcult. Sherrie might have felt less involvement and interest of her parents, which obviously makes her cynical and accusing them for everything. The kind of support she is giving her boyfriend and maybe he is giving her too is something she might have expected from her parents since early age. Irritated behaviour has developed since she does not feel close or connected with her parents. The love and support every child needs even if you are in college is very important. Especially during teenage age this connection with parents becomes more important as this phase is the most vulnerable one for the child. Relationships, identity crisis, career choices etc. all are happening and therefore parents need to be their at every step. Neglectful parenting style has lead to this behaviour in her. Her parents need to be more democratic and open with her so that this behaviour lessens and not worsens.
