Question
How would Richard Rodriguez respond to bell hooks quote, "Maintaining connections with family and community across class boundaries demand more than just summary recall of where one's roots are, where one comes from. It requires knowing, naming, and being every-mindful of those aspects of one's past that have enabled and do enable one's self-development in the present, that sustain and support that enrich.”

Explanation / Answer
Most of the time, people who have good education, job and a well settled life forget to get back to where they come from and teach their children about their family background. There also few people who don't want to identify themselves with people who struggle financially, socially and politically.
Knowing one's past is not just recalling things on a peripheral way but more deeper. Recalling the sacrifices that one's parents did to educate and help settle one, will really help one to build this intimate bond with their dear ones. Apart from the immediate family, there are also few distant relatives and few friends who will help us enrich our knowledge and experience if we approach them without any prejudice.
The attitudes and belief system of the parents will affect how one behaved and views the world. So, understanding them will help one adjust their attitude towards other people. Especially, when we mingle with people who are separated in term of ethnicity, class or colour etc. it would help one understand life in a different perspective.
