Explanation / Answer
Counseling has been defined as provision of professional assistance and guidance in resolving personal or psychological problems. In my opinion, counseling is not only the problem solution or resolution. It is about empowering the other person, counselee in this case, to become self-sufficient or complacent to deal with the issues he/she is facing. This means that counseling is not about providing solutions, it is about providing assistance to the persons to develop their abilities and capabilities to deal with day to day issues. Therefore, the role of a counselor is not to provide remedy or solutions to problems at hand, but also to develop the abilities and capabilities an individual is having. Another goal of counseling is to help prevent the individual to deal with the issues. Thus, the goal of counseling psychology is preventive, remedial as well as developmental for an individual.
Counseling process helps the individual a tool to develop themselves. At times, the individuals are not aware of the potential they are having. This awareness may come to the individual, the moment they become a part of the counseling process. It is not always undermining for an individual to be a part of therapy, there may be times, when only one or two sessions are enough to help relieve the pain or burden which one is feeling.
When an individual undergoes therapy, a sort of emotional churning takes place within the individual. The pent up emotions may be released and the person feels in control of his/her situations. The person has first and foremost responsible for their own selves, they need to be happy and complacent about their abilities. Therefore, a person who undergoes therapy will become a better person.
