Question

Gender and sexuality are intertwined in many cultures. (Gardiner & Kosmitzki, 2011) Socialization agents teach the appropriate behaviors for gender and the acceptable sexual attitudes and behaviors within a culture. Cultural differences exist around the world and across countries. For example, cultural differences may exist through the number of partners allowed in a marriage, expectations for males and females, and knowledge and application of safe sex practices. Differences may also arise in what is permitted and acceptable, such as premarital sex, same-sex relationships, and extramarital relationships. The consequences for an individual deviating from these cultural expectations also vary from culture to culture.

For this Assignment, choose one sexual attitude (e.g., abstinence, monogamy, etc.) and one sexual behavior (e.g., chastity, infidelity, etc.).

1. Select two cultures of interest to you.

2. Compare the similarities and differences of sexual attitudes and behaviors in each culture.

3. Describe the cultural factors that influence sexual attitudes and behaviors.

4. Explain how sexual attitudes and behaviors are perceived and displayed within each culture.

Be specific and provide examples.

Explanation / Answer

The world is constantly changing and the attitudes and behaviours of people are also changing significantly. The attitude towards sex has changes a lot, especially in the developed economies, premarital sex and same sex are accepted widely because these countries focus on individuals and capitalism. Not all the countries have the same attitude towards sex because it is closely related to the culture.
Attitude - Monogamy is the state of having only one sexual partner at a time.
Behaviour - Infidelity is cheating while on a relationship.

1. I have chosen Indian and American cultures.

2. People in America if they are not in a relationship can have multiple sex partners and casual sex with any number of people. Monogamy is not practised much and infidelity is more.
In India, premarital and same sex are illegal. Most of the time one can have sex with only one women in their life time unless they are divorced and get married. Sex out of marriage is considered to be culturally unacceptable and illegal. So monogamy is practised in India thus infidelity is less.

3. America is a free economy and economic independency has given same rights for men and women in terms of sexual attitude and sexual behaviours. Premarital and same sex is common in America. People speak openly about sex and people have the freedom to choose whoever they want to be with.
In India, sex is licensed through marriage, anything out of wedlock is considered to be a serious offence. People can't talk to other married women unless they are relatives. Women don't have the same right as men in terms of sex.

4. Sexual attitudes and behaviours are perceived openly and things are discussed casually in American culture. Especially women have all the freedom to talk about it freely as they live in an individualistic culture.
In India, it's a collective culture, so people, especially women are expected to be moderate and loyal to their husbands in terms of sex. Women and men are treated differently in Indian culture.
