Question
What is meant by “place theories of pitch?” What is the place theory explanation for the pitch of the missing fundamental? Describe Licklider’s masking studies of residue pitch, indicating what they show about the mechanisms by which pitch is extracted by the auditory system. Describe Licklider’s autocorrelation model of pitch, explaining the functioning of B, C, and D units (see slide 40). How are all-interval histograms generated? How are pooled autocorrelograms used to predict the pitch of the stimulus? How are pooled autocorrelograms used to account for (1) the pitch of the missing fundamental, (2) the pitch shift of inharmonic complexes and (3) the absence of effects of phase on pitch judgments?
Explanation / Answer
(Since you have put multiple questions in a single question, I am going to answer first three subparts. I hope it helps. Thanks)
Place theory of pitch: The place theory states that the pitch perception is coded at different parts along the BM and its a location based excitation pattern.
Working of pitch perception along the BM in place theory: The BM filters sound into its component parts and these are coded along the BM in different locations. The pace theory fail to explain the missing fundamentals unless there is a component of sound which displaces the membrane at the place that responds to the fundamental the pitch shouldn't be perceived.
