Question

Review the peer-reviewed scholarly article that addresses the topic of sugar and hyperactivity in children. Article Introduction – Who are these researchers? With whom are they affiliated? Have they researched this topic before? What do they believe about their topic? Was there, in your view, an adequate summary of the key issues studied before? What made it so? Did the researchers clearly define their theory or, in the case of an experiment, their hypothesis?

Method – In your own words, summarize their method, as you would a recipe. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their method.

Discussion – In your own words, offer a summary of what the study found. You should be able to state whether their theory or hypothesis was supported. Summarize the strengths and weaknesses of this study, as the researchers state it, but also offer your own analysis (anything they missed). What did they say that future researchers should consider, or do differently? What do you think?

Explanation / Answer

Note: This response is in UK English, please paste the response to MS Word and you should be able to spot discrepancies easily. You may elaborate the answer based on personal views or your classwork if necessary. I could not answer the second question as I could not find the authors’ affiliations.

(Answer) – (1) Who are these researchers?

Yujeong Kim and Hyeja Chang

(2) With whom are they affiliated?

(3) Have they researched this topic before?

Kim Y – “Environmental and Body Concentrations of Heavy Metals at Sites Near and Distant from Industrial Complexes in Ulsan, Korea.”

and

“Clinical analysis of single filtration plasmapheresis using continuous renal replacement therapy machines in kidney transplantation.”

Chang H – “Consumer perceptions on sustainable practices implemented in foodservice organizations in Korea.”

And

“Comparison of fast food consumption and dietary guideline practices for children and adolescents by clustering of fast food outlets around schools in the Gyeonggi area of Korea.”

Among many others.

(4) What do they believe about their topic?

They believe that sugar intake amongst children with fathers who consume alcohol frequently is more. Furthermore, they believe that these children who consume more sugar are likelier to show symptoms of ADHD.

(5) Was there, in your view, an adequate summary of the key issues studied before? What made it so?

The abstract and introduction had several clauses and concepts thrown in. This makes it complicated to single out a cause and effect especially when using a correlation coefficient.

Adhd, sugar intake, alcohol intake of the children’s fathers, protein intake in Korea, lack of calcium intake are some of the few concepts dabbled in the beginning of the paper.

(6) Did the researchers clearly define their theory or, in the case of an experiment, their hypothesis?

The researchers have managed to make the topic clear through the research methodology and scientific calculations. The research, however, tends to lack focus in certain areas. Even if there are many clauses in this issue, it needs to be clarified better.

Summary of Methods – 54 girls and 58 boys who were enrolled in a 5th grade class in Korea were the subjects of this study. Over the period of four months, data was collected in terms of the children’s sugar consumption and their behavioural patterns. These patterns were measured through questionnaires. One handed to the students and one to the teachers. The CATRS-10 scale of measurement which is widely used to check for ADHD symptoms was used in this case. CAN Pro 3.0 and BMI was used to analyse the food intake and the effects on the children’s physical fitness. SPSS software was finally used to categorise the students into two groups as those under risk and those who were not. This was calibrated through the Manel-Haenszel-Cochran test.

Summary of Conclusion – The subjects were studied on the basis of how often they got cranky, level of excitement and aggression and other such factors. Also, they belonged to families where the fathers consumed alcohol and smoked more often than the mother. Furthermore, they were from families where the fathers had white-collar jobs.

After a study based on all these aspects acting as catalysts, it was concluded that boys were more susceptible to ADHD than the girls. 8 boys and 1 girl were the children in the risk group. There wasn’t much difference in the family backgrounds of these children. However, the amount of smoking amongst fathers in this group seemed to be proportional to the level of jobs they possessed. Furthermore, the lack of daily nutrition in the risk group was significantly poor as compared to the group who did not particularly show symptoms of ADHD.
