Zimbardo’s conclusions about the prison setting itself, as well as the cause of prison violence was that the prison violence is rooted in the social character of the jail setting, not in the personalities of guards and prisoners. I agree with Zimbardo’s conclusion, because I think sociologically speaking that just the thought of being in prison messes with people's minds and therefore could make them do drastic things like violence. The living conditions in prison could be a culture shock even for those coming from the lower class. The living conditions alone can mess with a person's mind and cause them to become “servile, dehumanized robots who thought only of escape, of their own individual survival and of their mounting hatred for the guards” (Zimbardo, 1972:4). Zimbardo even goes as far to say that even the guards social character changes in the jail setting, by “treating others as if they were despicable animals, taking pleasure in cruelty” (Zimbardo, 1972:4).

In real life no chemical may be needed but just the right dose of certain social situations can transform ordinarily good people into evildoers.The mental state of people like stress,depression,poverty which might lead them to engage in criminal acts,land up in prison which all the all the more escalates the feelings of despair and frustation that makes the individual evil. Situational forces dominate most of us at various times in our lives,even though we'd all like to believe we're each that singular hero who can resist those powerful external pressures. Sometimes the anonymity of place, dehumanization makes the individual develop fear and using violent behaviour could become their defence mechanism of overcoming that shock of being in an isolated prison. Prison conditions prove to be a major determinant of whether one is more likely to become a criminal, since they provide an environment in which prisoners can socialize with each other. With prisoners being stuck inside such a small space for years, there is plenty to talk about and there is no doubt that crime and techniques will come up in conversation amongst the prisoners since some could already be criminals.
