Question

3. What are some accretion measures that might be assessable from people's Facebook pages? How might these measures point to the psychological qualities on the part of the pages owners? What are some strengths and weaknesses of archival research? How does experimental research differ from a case study approach? What is a random sample? How does it differ from a stratified sample or a convenience sample? 4. 5. 6. 7. What is ethnography? How can it be used to explore psychological issues? 8. Name four common sources of research ideas. 9. Compare and contrast the focus and goals of basic and applied research in psychology 10. Why should research approaches be placed on a continuum rather than in discrete categories?

Explanation / Answer

3)Accretion refers to the build up of physical traces. Its just the evidence of behvaiour people leave behind after having engaged in it. People on facebook specifically engage in a lot judgment formation and jumping to conlusions debates. Anything to do with someone's clothes, religion, physical appearance etc. people comment on everything. Some profiles only talk negative which showcases their own insecurities with life and some profiles show a healthy debate which is mostly neutral or positive reflecting their sensibility. Scrutinizing what others have written or showing a picture reflects the cynicism or intelligence of people. The psychological qualities could range from being insecure, low self esteem to being smart and sensible. 4) Strengths of Archival Research: No additional data collection required Its a more cost effective method It can be inclusive of longer periods, thus allowing for broader view of outcomes. Weaknesses of Archival Research Causal conclusions impossible Rare behaviors can be studied Appropriate records often not available Nonmanipulable events can be studied Data collected by nonscientists Data usually correlational at best 5)A case study is a qualitative research methodology which attempts to gather qualitative information on some subject of interest. It is often used in fields where many issues arise which cannot be well quantified. Case studies can be used as stand alone research methods or to complement quantitative research methods. An experiment is usually a designed comparison between a sample divided between control observations and some "experimental" observations on sample objects or people. The objective of the experiment is to measure any "treatment effect" caused by the conduct of an experiment. An experiment is a research approach which uses statistics. A case study is a methodology for gathering information on some events which cannot be well measured. 6) Random sample means that each individual in the population as an equal chance of being included in the sample. The key to random selection is that there is no bias involved in the selection of the sample. Any variation between the sample characteristics and the population characteristics is only a matter of chance. A stratified sample  is a mini-reproduction of the population. Before sampling, the population is divided into characteristics of importance for the research. For example, by gender, social class, education level, religion, etc. Then the population is randomly sampled within each category or stratum. A convenience sample is a matter of taking what you can get. It is an accidental sample. Although selection may be unguided. Whatever is easily accessible is included in the sample. Volunteers would constitute a convenience sample. 7)Ethnography is a research method central to knowing the world from the standpoint of its social arrangements. It is a qualitative research method predicated on the diversity of culture at home and abroad.thnography is the primary method of social and cultural anthropology, but it is integral to the social sciences and humanities generally, and draws its methods from many quarters, including the natural sciences. It is used in field researches in psychology wherein participant observation could used by psychologists to study mental health issues, consumer behaviour etc.Community psychology recognizes the need for research methods that illuminate context, culture, diversity, and process by using ethnography.Ethnographic work stands at the intersection of bridging universal questions with the particularities of people and groups bounded in time, geographic location, and social location. Ethnography is thus historical and deeply contextual, enabling a rich, in-depth understanding of communities that is aligned with the values and goals of community psychology. 8) Sources of research ideas could be,personal experiences, any thereotical basis, literature, such as books, journal articles, and newspapers. 9)Basic research is one that adds further knowledge to the actual knowledge.Applied research implies the research that is put to practical use and is beneficial to solve practical problems. Basic Research refers to the study that is aimed at expanding the existing base of scientific. knowledge.Applied Research is the research that is designed to solve specific practical problems or answer certain questions. Basic research has a universal approach whereas Applied research has a limited approach. Basic research aims at developing scientific knowledge and predictions whereas Applied research aims at the development of technology and technique. The goal of basic research is o add some knowledge to the existing one. The goal of Applied research is to find out solution for the problem at hand. 10)A research method which is more qualitative in nature should always inidicate both ends of the continuum rather than being rigid or discrete. The process of research involves emerging questions and procedures, data typically collected in the participant’s setting, data analysis inductively building from particulars to general themes, and the researcher making interpretations of the meaning of the data. Having a continuum leads to better inferences made with few data points and a valid analysis.
