Question

This is a key area of the field that is very important to understand even if you disagree with some of its ideas. Answer these questions carefully from an evolutionary perspective, trying to offer the best possible explanation from that perspective. Remember, evolutionary theory in psychology is about genetically driven behavior, not thoughts, that get more and more common in the gene pool. 1. How would an evolutionary psychologist explain differing levels of physical aggression in males and females 2. How about male attraction to healthy youthful women? 3. How about female attraction to mature, affluent men? 4. How about gender differences in play behavior, where boys tend to play in groups focused on an activity, while girls tend to play one-on-one and talk more openly? 5. How can differences between males and females in testosterone level support this perspective?

Explanation / Answer

1. Aggression is the behavior that might harm other people and originally it was restricted to the verbal as well as physical forms. According to evolutionary psychologists, all behavior is such that it would be perpetuated in the gene pool as a continuation and this would ensure survival of different species. Evolutionary theory explaining this difference in aggression levels by the male warrior hypothesis. Males are considered to be more aggressive than females. The evolutionary history that shows conflict as well as aggression within different groups of men result in these differences.

2. Males are attracted to healthy youthful women because men are more directed towards the se-xual interest that is displayed in women who are present in their mid twenties. Women in their mid twenties are known to be most fertile. In the evolutionary past, men who had inter-course with women in the mid twenties have had greater nu,bed of offsprings, thus an inclination towards the more healthy women.

3. Women are inclined towards men who are mature, affluent because they are inclined to look for a man who could provide for her and her children. WOmen have been looking for men who could provide appropriate resources for their survival. This is because in the evolutionary past, women have only been taking care of the homes, and families have been looking for affluent men having a high earning capacity, owing to the male dominated society.

4. Boys get engaged in more physical forms of play because this would form more stable engagements and would result in direct competitions with one another. This is more evident since in the evolutionary past, men wanted to establish their dominance in the society, and this establishment led to the tendency to get ahead one another. Whereas, for women, or girls, they have always strived to be the more likeable ones. For the girls, the main commodity is intimacy and relationships which can only be built in through relationship building.

5. Testosterone level is often Associated with aggression and have an inclination towards dominance as well as masculinity. They also have ani creased perception of territoriality.
