Explanation / Answer

A model that emphasises selective attention had been proposed by Anne Treisman whose further revision was done by Donald Broadbent. According to Treisman, attenuation theory is used to explain the manner in which unattended stimuli would be processed in a manner that is more vigorous. This came as a theory that added further depth to the theory proposed by Broadbent, which explained the operation of selective attention. The theory by Broadbent stated the ways in which there would ne filteration of the inputs from the areas of complete awareness. This process was referred to as attenuation.

Broadbent’s model of attenuation:

Broadbent was responsible in explaining the processing system that humans possess. Broadbent was the first to propose that attention could also be selective and that humans have the ability to process information in a limited manner and can select which information has to be processed early and which information should be processed later.

Because of this limited capacity, humans have the ability to add a selective filter to information processing. Broadbent elaborated that all of the information would be processed in the beginning, so as to identify the physical as well as basic properties describing the given information. Broadbent stayed that these particular semantic properties of an information, because of its complicated nature and this Imposes a capacity of limitation on the incoming information. Thus, the physical characteristics of an information stimuli would determine if the stimuli has to pass through the selective filter, whereas the unattended stimuli will get lost. The splitting of the stimuli that is coming in had been emphasised by Broadbent and that channel selection will be guided via attention.

Triessman’s attenuation theory has the base as Broadbent’s theory. According to Treisman as well, there is a human filter on processing of information. Though, the argument proposed by triessman that the unattended sensory input will not be eliminated and it would remain. This process is referred to as attenuation, in which the sensory inputs that have not been selected, will be processed in the processing Cen-ter, though with a lower intensity.
