Question

For each of the following assertions, reword in such a way that would remove the bias and would reflect a pro what the research showed. Because these are mock examples, you can make up the exact response as long as it reflects the prompt given. Your answer can reflect either correlation or causation terminology, but include at least two of each. Identify which one your statement reflects per research statement. Pretend the research has been conducted, and you are writing 1. It makes sense that spanking would cause aggression in children. 2. It seems logical that smoking cannabis increases schizophrenia since it heightens fantas and delusions 3. In my experience, students who use cell phones in class do more poorly on exam questions that reflect lecture material.

Explanation / Answer

1.Spanking i.e.hitting a child on the bottom with an open hand--is common around the world. In the United States, research suggests that about a quarter of toddlers and half of 3 year olds get spanked occasionally. It makes sense to think that a spanking teaches kids what it feels like to be hurt, or that if they act aggressively they’ll get an aggressive response, so they should try a different way of communicating. Spanking is modeling violence—mild as it may be. For example, in one large study over 7 years, with participants drawn from 20 U.S. cities, researchers concluded that children whose mothers had spanked them more than twice a month when they were 3 were more aggressive at the age of 5. 2.It has become clearer is that the more cannabis you smoke, the greater your risk of becoming psychotic;this is often referred to as the “dose-response” relationship. Also, for people who already have schizophrenia, cannabis can make the hallucinations and thought disorder they experience worse; they also take longer to recover from these when they do get treatment. Still it is believed that cannabis can trigger schizophrenia in people who are predisposed to the disease; meaning those with family histories of the disorder. There is a well-established link between people who use cannabis and schizophrenia. People who are at risk for schizophrenia are more likely to use cannabis, and in greater quantities. The genetic variants associated with schizophrenia were predictive for cannabis use in healthy individuals, so there appears to be some genetic overlap between the two. 3. Students using cell phones during class may affect more than just their individual academic performance; student cell phone use may actually have a negative impact on the entire class and the quality of teaching.  Using cell phones in the classroom has been connected with lower recall and a decrease in student satisfaction with instruction; comprehension has also lessened when students use electronic devices for non-educational purposes.
