Explanation / Answer
As part of their personal and professional life, people are often required to give informative speeches to a set of audience. There are many ways to inform the audience. The experts in public communication have classified the informative speeches into four types i.e. definition, descriptive, explanatory, and demonstrative speeches.
A definition speech attempts to clarify a concept and meaning about a topic, theory or philosophy behind it. The primary aim of this speech is to educate the audience with exact and factual information. For example, the animal controller may explain the eating behavior of deer, and the preferred food by the animal. The insurance agent may present the concept of insurance and explain why insurance is required for the people.
A descriptive speech presents an elaborate description of a topic, object, person or an idea. Features appealing to all senses are presented in descriptive speech. For example, the insurance agent may describe various types of customers and their contexts. The animal controller may describe the symptoms of specific disease that may be commonly found in pets.
An explanatory speech is intended to provide details and the reasons behind an activity. This type of speech is used to analyze the pros and cons of a topic. The animal trainer may explain how he balances the professional life with leisure such as bowling sport and animal rearing in local habitat. The insurance agent may explain the value of insurance in various contexts.
A demonstration talk is to roll out or testify how a thing works. The presenter may use tools such as case study, story, video, live demonstration, etc. to show how a thing works. This is a deep level presentation involving many resources. For example, the animal controller may demonstrate how to mend the eating behavior of dogs. The insurance agent may provide a demonstration of how to make insurance claims.
Depending on the purpose of the speech, the presenter can choose the type of speech.
