Explanation / Answer

Church dominated the world with its theoretical and faith related concepts, just like the other religions in the world. It was controlling the kings and the governments with its threatening of heaven and hell. So, when Galileo discovered that the shape of the earth is circle and not flat as proposed by the Church, there was a conflict. When Science announced that it's not the sun that revolves around the earth, instead the earth and other planets revolve around the earth, it was considered as a heresy. Religion was afraid of Science as it put the religious beliefs to test and questioned the ideologies. When Darwin announced that we all evolved it was against the belief that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. So, these conflicts made the Church announce that Science is operating against it and executed all the early Scientists.
Enlightenment thoughts began in the seventeenth century and it got intensified during the eighteenth century. This period was also considered as the age of reasoning as people were breaking the barriers of religion, politics, art, society etc. Great scientists such as, Isaac Newton, Galileo and Great thinkers such as Francis Bacon, John Locke revolutionised the way the society was progressing as they were trying to make the people aware that they were under the clutches of the Catholic Church and they need to break free from the Church, if they have to experience and fulfill their destiny. In my opinion, they tried to get liberated from the Church in order to construct a progressive society and the Church has apologised for its cruelty and ignorance only in the 20th century.

Most of the enlightenment thinkers and scientists were trying to prove that Human beings are equals and they have lots of inner potential which shouldn't be affected by the myths of the religion. Church was calling everyone sinners and brought a guilty feeling about it. People regarded themselves as inferiors and lived their life as non-rational beings. Enlightenment movement worked hard to make people believe that they are not sinners and it's alright to make mistakes and the famous quote to err is human. It didn't work against the church but treated it as a separate entity and believed that it shouldn't be confused with the reality as the teachings of the church was metaphorical not realistic.
