Explanation / Answer

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a safe sleep environment that can reduce the risk of all sleep-related infant deaths. Recommendations for a safe sleep environment include supine positioning, the use of a firm sleep surface, room-sharing without bed-sharing, and the avoidance of soft bedding and overheating. Additional recommendations for SIDS reduction include the avoidance of exposure to smoke, alcohol, and illicit drugs; breastfeeding; routine immunization; and use of a pacifier. Breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of SIDS.Unless contraindicated, mothers should breastfeed exclusively or feed with expressed milk i.e, not offer any formula or other nonhuman milk-based supplements for 6 months, in alignment with recommendations of the AAP. Avoidance of soft sleeping surfaces, pillows, duvets and sheepskins has been recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Avoid the use of home monitors or commercial devices - such as wedges or positioners - that claim to lower SIDS risk. Ensure infants have received all their recommended vaccinations. Supervised tummy time when a baby is awake is recommended in order to aid development. AAP suggest healthcare providers have open and nonjudgmental conversations with parents about their infant sleep practices.Additionally, they call for the media and advertisers to raise awareness of safe sleep recommendations by promoting them in images and messages to the general public. Parents who have lost their child because of SIDS need counseling and also answers regarding the cause of death. It is difficult for many parents to face this type of investigation while struggling to cope with an infant's death. Parents can be encouraged to seek support from their religious group, a SIDS support group, or a grief counseling center. Counseling or psychotherapy can be helpful in coping with the loss of a child. Since parents mental health is of utmost importance at this time it is essential to help them overcome this period of grief. One-on-one counseling sessions can be done which usually includes a discussion of emotional responses to the loss, coping methods, and ways to maintain personal relationships. Also relaxation techniques can be taught to the parents. Also if parents have more children, they can be explained how to take care of their other children's sleeping habits,positions,bed-sharing,not smoking etc. so that they become more aware and control these factors in future.
