Everyday design Before you participate in this discussion please review chapters 4 and 5 carefully. Design elements and principles are an essential part of this course, I will ask you to refer to them again and again. I don't expect you to be experts but to begin to be aware of them increasingly. We use design elements in varying degrees every day. From picking food in the cafeteria to dressing your kid for school For example What choices do you make??? They aren't necessarily "art" related. Pick one personal visually-related activity and relate design elements that you use. Be specific in describing which element, and how you are using the concepts. (Answer) The holiday seasons generally bring their own theme and colours into our homes, clothes, food, photographs etc. For instance, the autumn mood beckons us to drink a cinnamon spice latte or a pumpkin pie. Furthermore, out photographs tend to have a beautiful orange tree or two in it.

The Christmas season too comes with its opportunities to invest in aesthetics. At Christmas, organising a dinner or lunch party at home with the family can be an experience to dabble with design. Although the more experienced chefs or the family may make the goose, suckling, duck or any form of a roast, one would generally help with the setting. Setting the table with burlap cloth and tossing pinecones with Christmas crackers around, calls for a good setting.

The idea was to fill every corner of the house with elements that one would find in an old Christmas magazine illustration. The kind of page that one could stare at for ages and try to catch the little cola bottle, the holly leaves and the Christmas pudding in different corners of the room.

Twinkle lights adorned the base of the ceiling and mistletoe across the doorframe. A fire crackling made the room a very light yellow and bought out the lines and shadows that in fact made the setting cosy and the family a little sleepy after the pudding.

Although these preferences may not exactly point out to art at a Louvre level, they certainly beckon one to get into a certain kind of mood. If one thinks about art, its purpose is to primarily influence a mood in the one who beholds it.

Setting up a home for a Christmas dinner consisted of themes and elements inspired by nature, like pine cones, holly, a fire and sparkly snowflake ornaments. If one truly thinks about art, it almost always is inspired by nature, unless one chooses to paint a picture of their smartphone. The purpose of design is to create are and the purpose of art is to imitate life.
