3.9. Analyze the following essay using the W.I.S.E approach detailed in Chapter 2 In conducting your research, be especially careful to find and examine view- points that differ from the one presented. Write a composition presenting your findings. A DISSERVICE TO EVERYONE By Bruce Malone Talk-show TV often displays a mindlessness that's as amazing as it is appalling. One show, for example, featured teenagers who had decided to drop out of high school. The program began with the teens presenting their reasons for quitting, then proceeded to have their parents, a guest expert, and the host try to persuade them to stay in school. Finally, the teens were given a chance to answer the arguments of their elders. If the show's host and producers thought they were helping solve the problem of high school dropouts, they were mistaken. Appearing on tele- vision is an honor few people receive, even if they have made significant contributions to society. Yet those teens received just that honor for threat- ening to drop out of school. Their foolishness was dignified and they were made to feel like celebrities. Worse, by being allowed to have the last word on the issue, they were given an advantage over the adults. The chances that those teens changed their minds after the program are slim to none. They very likely had the show videotaped and ran the tape over and over, showing their friends how they held their own in the debate. They may even fantasize that a career in television awaits them. It's not hard to imagine them becoming the heroes of the neighborhood. Such programs make the jobs of parents and teachers more dif ficult. Popular culture has already convinced many young people that they know more than their elders, that their opinions have special value, and that learning is a waste of time. Television shows that reinforce such nonsense are surely not a public service. If anything, they ar disservice a public

Explanation / Answer

Dropping out of high school is a problem that needs attention and correction but not in the way that the TV talk show set out to tackle this problem.Their decision to invite dropped out teenagers to discuss shows that they want to be popular and climb the TRP charts. They do not have any genuine interest in the interest and the well being of kids. Considering the television and the talk show to come up with a solution to the matter is thinking short of the problem. They will only do what captures them more audience and make them more popular. There is hardly any benefit to the cause happened because of some TV show.Let us take few examples of talk shows in the past like OJ Simpson on the talk show or cheating husband and wife coming on the show and confessing about their dishonesty.Has the dishonesty of this sort increased in society post the telecast of the show? or these problems have been wiped out from our society. The answer is no. So we should not expect too much from the shows and also not be too much bothered about the repercussions once some absurd TV show is telecasted.
