Question

Consider the following hypothetical situation:

Jordan is a 30 year old male who owns a very successful veterinarian business in Tallahassee, Fl. Jordan is single but owns his own home, car, and business. Jordan has little to no financial worries. Overall, Jordan feels very content with his life.

Jasmine is a 30 year old single mom living in Tallahassee, Fl. She works full time as an assistant manager at McDonalds. Jasmine has an 8 year old daughter who has special needs. Month to month, Jasmine worries about how she is going to pay the rent. She does not own a vehicle and has to use Uber to get to and from work each day. Jasmine often feels alone and hopeless. She has contemplated suicide but does not want to leave her daughter alone.

From a behaviorist perspective describe the childhood and early adulthoods of both Jordan and Jasmine. You get to create a background story here for each character. Take it wherever you think is appropriate but do it from the lens of a behaviorist. Specifically explain at least 4 specific variables for each character (from early childhood to adulthood) that would have impacted them and helped contribute to the current situations. After you describe the background story and how it impacted each character and helped mold them into who they are today, explain at least 2 specific steps that a behaviorist might take to help Jasmine reach her goals or to become more successful. Explain why a behaviorist would do this.

Explanation / Answer

Jordan’s grew up in a loving family and got proper education through high school. During his school, he actively participated in sports and also scored good GPA. He grew up to be a confident teenager. He did not conform to peer pressure and knew what he wanted. Being a popular guy, he also dated several girls during his senior high. He knew how to keep his priorities when he attended college and focused on holding a stable job. He put dating secondary. His hard work and focus and support from his family led him to run a successful private business.

Jasmine’s father passed away when she was just 2 years old. She was 3 other siblings. Her mother worked multiple jobs to make ends meet and was barely home to care for her family. Jasmine dropped out of school and spent most of her time outside the house. Her family condition led Jasmine to develop a lot of stress as she got older. She tried to make up her loneliness by dating and soon found out that she was pregnant. The father of her child was an addict and they soon parted. She started working wherever she could get a job but her battle with depression escalated over the years. The care that is required for her mentally abled child becomes more challenging every day.

Jasmine’s psychological situation can be intervened by cognitive restructuring: her worries about the financial struggle can be replaced by positive thoughts such as what she can do to earn more. And also as long as she keeps working, she will be able to get the money to support her child and pay for the rent. Relaxation technique such as breathing exercise will calm the breath and will allow to approach the problems from a place of balance, facilitating more effective and rational decision making.
