In our reading assignment this week, Individual Differences in Person Perception (ink below), we learn about how our individual perceptions influence the way we see the world and each other. In fact, our text states, “To every experience, each of us brings our own schemas, attitudes, and expectations. In fact, the process of interpretation guarantees that we will not all form exactly the same impression of the people that we see. This, of course, reflects a basic principle that we have discussed throughout this book—our prior experiences color our current perceptions.” Think of a time when your own expectations influenced your attributions about another person.

What type of expectations did you have and what type of attributions did you end up making?

In hindsight, how accurate do you think that these attributions were?

Explanation / Answer

I came from background of middle class but modern parents, who had dynamic thoughts and our house also always had variety of guests. I enjoyed my school life, neighbourhood, life amongst cousins but still I felt that somethig is lacking, some peace is not there. During my college days I found a group of friends who also came from middle class but traditional background, I enjoyed their company a lot and found my peace by the talks we had, by the sleepovers we had. I enjoyed all these things a lot. I thought those were my close or my best friends, later when the collge got over they turned their lives on their tracks, a typical traditional track such as marraige, kids etc.Limitations of friends, and somewhere I they had also started avoiding me since I obviously ended up in marrying to modern person.

This laid a huge difference, things which I had perceived as close, beautiful are not the same anymore. I was pretty inaccurate in making these perceptions. Though I would admire the individual quality but close relationship is not possible. I had huge or unendng expectations, but the things took a different turn
