The aim of this qualitative study was to provide a context specific understanding of youth exposure to violence (ages 10–15 years) and use of cognitive and behavioral coping strategies.This qualitative research provides important, culturally grounded information on coping strategies used by youth in rural post-conflict settings where limited psychosocial support services are available. Understanding use of cognitive and behaviors coping strategies may inform local community and international development programs to support youth mental health along adaptive trajectories resulting in promotion of well-being and reduced risk taking behaviors. (Coping among trauma-affected youth: a qualitative study) Although research has focused on the difficulties faced in adapting to life following the experiences of a traumatic event, limited research has examined positive legacies of incorporating a traumatic experience into life posttrauma. This study uses quantitative and qualitative data (N = 218) to examine the effect that trauma severity and social support have on posttrauma outcomes. Individuals’ perceptions of their traumatic experiences and the social support they received were significant influences posttrauma. The knowledge gained has practical applications for therapy and the client/counsellor relationship in terms of counselling and facilitating personal growth after trauma. (A Mixed-Method Analysis of Posttrauma Outcomes: Trauma Severity and Social Support from a Psychotherapeutic Perspective) Qualitative research involves data collected from participant observations, interviews, questionnaires, phone calls, focus groups etc. Interviewing, focus groups, and participant observation are common modes of qualitative data gathering. Interviews are used in most types of qualitative research. Its more useful to study the social realities. Quantitative research methods use statistical analysis for collecting and analysing the data. Research is used to test a theory and ultimately support or reject it.For example, a rating scale or closed questions on a questionnaire would generate quantitative data as these produce either numerical data or data that can be put into categories. Research in social psychology would be inconceivable today without the use of questionnaires, interviews and focus groups. The study of stereotypes has traditionally been performed by designing questionnaires that solicit attribute generation and/or evaluation. One of the first benefits of using surveys was the capacity to collect data from large samples, ensure confidentiality and obtain quantitative responses that are easy to statistically test. Despite these obvious benefits, many researchers started to doubt the capacity or willingness of respondents to “objectify” their stereotypes and more indirect approaches have been elaborated. Interviews could be one solution for overcoming these shortcomings and generally allowing a more in-depth analysis of this phenomenon. In this case though a limited number of subjects can be studied and there is always the risk of participants distorting their beliefs due to self-presentation biases.
