Question
“Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD, is marked by inattention, impulsiveness, a low tolerance for frustration, and generally a great deal of inappropriate activity” (Feldman, 2015). Children with attention disorders is occurs in 3 to 5 percent of the school age population. It is very difficult for children, parents, and teachers to deal with this because it highly effects their home and school performances and attitudes. Sometimes it is hard to identify the difference between children who have ADHD and children who are just more active and have more energetic personalities. Some common symptoms of children with ADHD are; difficulty or inability to complete tasks, follow simple instructions, and keep organized, inability to sit still, persistent fidgeting and squirming, often interrupts others who are talking, and they often talk a lot and at very fast speeds, diving right into tasks before waiting for the full instructions to be given, and very impatient. Nine percent of children ages three to seventeen years old have ADHD, but boys are twice as likely to develop ADHD than girls. No one really knows the cause of ADHD, but some research has shown that the thickening of the brain cortex lags about 3 years behind a child who doesn’t have ADHD compared to a child who does. In order to diagnose a trained clinician has to perform various tests and studies. Many times, to treat they prescribe medication. The rate of medication in children is rapidly increasing and has shown positive results in increasing attention spans, but they do have side effects such as loss of appetite, irritability, and depression. So, some more natural ways to deal with children who have ADHD is giving them verbal rewarding when they behave well, teachers can have more structured and organized tasks in classroom, and dietary changes may need to even be made. It is also helpful to give a child something else to do while they are trying to focus, like squeezing a ball or consistently pushing a button.
